Janina Ochojska left astronomy to help those who need it most.

Janina Ochojska will arrive in Miami from Poland on February the 28th. An astronomer by training, she was employed by the Polish Academy of Sciences before she found her calling as a humanitarian during the bloody Balkan wars that erupted in 1991 as Yugoslavia disintegrated. Whenever there is a war, flood, earthquake or famine, her name is in the headlines. We read about her and watch her on TV screens in flashing images that include the anguished faces of fleeing refugees, shattered towns ravaged by armies, or homeless children whimpering in the cold.

She organized her first 12-truck convoy to Sarajevo, followed by scores of other convoys to some of the most dangerous places outside Poland, such as Serbia, Kosovo, Turkey, Afghanistan and Chechnia, where people needed help most. Honored for her work with those in need, she was named "Woman of Europe" in 1994 by the European Community. She now chairs PAH, a humanitarian non-governmental organization - the largest in Poland. In Europe she is being compared to Mother Theresa. In Poland she is loved by children, who - on her urging - join her in the humanitarian program called PAJACYK by giving her one zloty each from their own money. In this way, they can help other Polish children who are in need. She has thus collected several million zloties - and at the same time made several million children proud and happy for having helped other children. Anyone who clicks on her Web site www.pajacyk.com , will trigger a contribution of one tenth of a zloty to aid program for needy children. The roots of her commitments reach back into her childhood, which she spent in a wheel chair in a series of health institutions. She had polio as a child and had to undergo several operations. As a result she can now walk with the aid of crutches. During the political storm in Poland and the martial law declared after the widespread protests against the Communist regime, the country was plunged into a profound economical crisis. Humanitarian aid started to arrive from abroad and Janina Ochojska - like many other Poles - got involved with these organizations and got some experience. Later on, when Poland became an independent country, she decided that it was time for Poland to also help the needy in other countries.
